If a message you started writing is missing from the Inbox, check the Drafts mailbox first: drafts are stored there, not in Inbox. In Mail on your Mac, open Drafts in the sidebar or Favorites bar, then search that mailbox by a distinctive subject phrase, recipient, or wording from the message. If you still cannot find it, check each account’s Drafts mailbox and its draft-storage setting before concluding the message is gone.

Open the Drafts mailbox

Open Mail and look in the sidebar for Drafts. If the sidebar is hidden, use View > Show Sidebar. Select Drafts to see saved messages that have not been sent. Apple describes Drafts as a standard mailbox for each email account, and notes that you can also access it from the Favorites bar. Apple’s guide to sending email in Mail

If you use multiple accounts, expand the mailbox list if needed and inspect the Drafts folder under the account you used to compose the message. A combined Drafts view may be available in Mail, but checking an individual account’s Drafts mailbox is a useful way to narrow down which account holds the message. Drafts are not necessarily filed with the account you are currently viewing in the Inbox.

Search for the draft by something you remember

Select Drafts, then type a distinctive phrase into the Search field in Mail’s toolbar. Try the subject first; if the subject was blank or generic, try a recipient’s name or a unique phrase from the body. Choose a relevant search suggestion so Mail applies a search filter. If your current mailbox has no match, select “Search all mailboxes” beneath the field, or select the Drafts mailboxes you want to search in the sidebar. Mail allows searching one or more mailboxes and narrowing results by subject, sender, or message text. Apple’s guide to searching in Mail

When results are too narrow, remove one filter at a time. Mail combines multiple search filters, so a phrase plus a sender or subject filter can exclude a draft that would match either clue on its own. Search for a short, unusual phrase rather than a full sentence, and check the message list for a likely result before opening it.

Check whether drafts are stored under another account mailbox

Mail can store an account’s drafts on the mail server or in a mailbox on the Mac. For IMAP accounts, inspect the setting by choosing Mail > Settings, clicking Accounts, selecting the account, and opening Mailbox Behaviors. Look at Drafts Mailbox to see which mailbox is designated for drafts. The available settings depend on account type, and Apple says the Drafts Mailbox choice is available for IMAP accounts. If the selected draft location is a server mailbox, look for the corresponding Drafts folder under that account in Mail. Server-stored messages are available when you use the account on another computer; messages assigned to an On My Mac mailbox are stored locally and available only on that Mac. If you use a work or school account, the folder names or storage choices may be managed by the provider, so do not change the mailbox assignment just to search for one missing message.

If the draft still does not appear

First clear the search field and return to the mailbox list. Confirm that Mail is showing the relevant account and that Drafts is expanded. Search all mailboxes with a distinctive phrase; Mail’s search works across mailboxes, and its filters can be changed or removed when results do not look right. Apple’s search instructions

If a mailbox shows incomplete results or messages appear missing or garbled, Apple documents Mailbox > Rebuild as a way to update the list of messages in a selected mailbox. Select the relevant Drafts mailbox before choosing that command. Rebuilding is a mailbox maintenance step; it is not a command to recover a message that was never saved or is no longer available from its storage location. Apple’s mailbox guide

Do not remove and re-add an account as a first search step. Apple notes that removing an account removes its messages from the Mac, even though copies may remain on the mail server. If you cannot see the draft in Mail, check the account through its provider’s webmail or ask the provider’s administrator about its draft folder and sync status. Apple’s account management guide

A practical search sequence is: open Drafts, search by subject or a distinctive phrase, repeat for each account’s Drafts mailbox, inspect the designated Drafts Mailbox setting when available, and consider rebuilding only if mailbox contents appear incomplete. This keeps the task focused on finding the saved draft while distinguishing a mailbox visibility issue from a message that may not have been saved.
