If one scanned page is sideways in an otherwise readable PDF, use Preview on your Mac and rotate only that page. Open the PDF, show the page thumbnails, select the thumbnail for the misoriented page, and click Rotate Left. To rotate clockwise, hold Option while clicking the rotate control. Check the surrounding pages, then save. The key is selecting the page you mean to change, rather than applying the action across a multi-page selection.

Rotate a single PDF page in Preview

  1. Open the PDF in Preview. If it opens in another app, open Preview first, choose File > Open, and select the PDF.
  2. Choose View > Thumbnails to display page thumbnails in the sidebar. Apple also documents View > Contact Sheet as an alternate page overview.
  3. Find the scanned page with the wrong orientation and click its thumbnail once. Check that only that page is selected. If multiple thumbnails are highlighted, click the intended page by itself before rotating.
  4. Click the Rotate Left tool in the toolbar. Each click rotates the page further to the left. To rotate to the right instead, hold Option and click the rotate-right tool; continue until the text is upright.
  5. Inspect the page in the main document view and glance at the pages before and after it. This helps catch a wrong-page selection or an extra quarter-turn. Apple’s Preview guide describes rotating one page separately from rotating several selected pages. Crop or rotate a PDF in Preview on Mac

Identify the right page before rotating

The thumbnail sidebar is useful when a PDF contains many scans: click a thumbnail to go to that page, or use Go > Go to Page if you already know the page number. Apple documents both navigation methods. View PDFs and images in Preview on Mac

Page numbers can be confusing when a PDF has a cover or unnumbered inserts. Use the page’s contents and its position relative to nearby pages as a cross-check, instead of relying only on a number printed on the scan. That is a practical precaution, not a Preview feature: the actual page to select is the thumbnail corresponding to the scanned sheet you want upright.

Avoid rotating every page

Preview’s rotate control acts on one page when one page is selected; Apple documents multi-page rotation as a separate action: choose View > Thumbnails or View > Contact Sheet, select the pages, then rotate. If several thumbnails are selected, deselect them and select only the one that needs correction before clicking. Apple’s Preview rotation instructions

Also distinguish a saved page rotation from a change in how a document is displayed. Adobe Acrobat documents a separate Rotate view option that changes the temporary view and restores the original orientation when the PDF is reopened. For a correction that should travel with the file, use Preview’s page rotation and save the document; don’t substitute an Acrobat view-rotation control. Rotate pages in PDFs using Acrobat on desktop

Save and check the corrected PDF

Choose File > Save, or press Command-S, then close and reopen the PDF if you want to confirm that the correction persisted. Preview can save edits automatically, and Apple also documents manual saving through File > Save. Save files in Preview on Mac Keyboard shortcuts in Preview on Mac

If you need to keep the original untouched, make a copy before editing: in Preview, choose File > Duplicate, then save the copy under a distinct name and location. Apple documents this as a way to create a duplicate PDF. If Preview’s rotate control is missing

The toolbar may be customized or collapsed. Check View > Customize Toolbar and look for the rotate control. If you don’t see a thumbnail sidebar, choose View > Thumbnails first so you can select the intended page clearly. Apple’s documented workflow uses the Rotate Left tool and Option-click for right rotation; it does not describe a universal keyboard shortcut for rotating a single PDF page, so use the visible control rather than assuming a shortcut.

If the page rotates but looks unchanged, click it again and inspect the text orientation. A scan that is upside down may need two quarter-turns; a landscape page may already be correctly oriented and only appear unusual beside portrait pages. The desired result is readable content, not that every page has the same shape.

For a PDF that behaves differently in another editor, switch back to Preview for this workflow or consult that editor’s instructions for page rotation. In Acrobat, for example, page rotation in Organize pages and temporary Rotate view are separate controls with different persistence. Wallo can help organize existing Mac windows around a goal while you work, but the PDF edit itself happens in Preview.
