To save an email attachment in a particular Finder folder, use the save or download control in your email app and select the destination in its save dialog. In Apple Mail, open the message’s attachment menu, choose the attachment or Save All, and select a location. If you save attachments to the same folder often, set that folder as Mail’s Downloads folder in Mail > Settings > General. These steps apply to files attached to an email; browser-based mail and other Mac email apps may use different controls.
Prepare the destination folder in Finder
If the folder already exists, note its name and location before you begin. In Finder, click a location in the sidebar such as Documents or Downloads, then open the folder you want to use. Finder’s sidebar provides shortcuts to common locations, and you can browse nested folders in the window. Organize your files in the Finder on Mac
To make a new destination, first navigate to its parent folder in Finder. Choose File > New Folder or press Shift-Command-N, type a recognizable name, then press Return. If New Folder is dimmed, you can’t create a folder in the current location; choose a different location where you have access. Organize your files in the Finder on Mac
A folder named for the task or sender can help distinguish attachments you are collecting, but keep the structure as simple as you need. For example, you might create Documents/Receipts/2026 for receipts you need to keep together. That path is an illustration; use a folder that exists on your Mac and suits your filing needs.
Save an attachment from Apple Mail
Open Mail and select the message with the attachment. Hover over the message header to reveal the attachment button.
Click the attachment button. Choose the attachment you want, or choose Save All if you want every attachment in the message.
In the location picker, navigate to the destination folder. Select it and click Save.
Apple’s Mail guide also documents selecting a message and choosing File > Save Attachments. You can save an individual attachment or save all from the message, then choose a location. The choice of destination is made during the save action; opening or previewing an attachment does not itself place a copy in your chosen folder. View, save or delete email attachments in Mail on Mac
After saving, open the destination folder in Finder and check that the file appears there. For a message with several attachments, confirm that you selected Save All if you intended to collect all of them. This simple check also makes it easier to notice if you selected the wrong location or a duplicate filename prompt appeared.
Set a default folder for future Mail attachments
If you regularly save attachments to one destination, you can change Mail’s Downloads folder. In Mail, choose Mail > Settings, click General, then choose the folder beside Downloads folder. Apple describes this setting as the folder where Mail stores attachments that you save. Change General settings in Mail on Mac
This setting is convenient when one folder is a sensible landing place for many files. It also means you should check the destination when saving an attachment for a different purpose: a default folder is not necessarily the right folder for every file. For a one-off save, choose the desired location in the save flow rather than assuming the default has changed.
Mail distinguishes saved attachments from temporary downloads. Apple notes that an attachment that has not been edited or saved may be removed when you delete the message, depending on the Remove unedited downloads setting; Mail does not delete attachments that you have saved. If you need to keep a file, use the explicit save action and verify the copy in Finder. View, save or delete email attachments in Mail on Mac
Save attachments from Outlook for Mac
In Outlook for Mac, open the message or display it in the reading pane, then click the drop-down arrow next to the attachment and choose Download. Microsoft says to use Finder to choose where to save it. For multiple attachments, choose Download All when that option is available. The exact menu may vary between current and legacy Outlook, so follow the label shown in your version; Microsoft's legacy instructions call the individual save option Save As. In the Finder save dialog, navigate through the folder list or sidebar to the destination you prepared, then save. Confirm the final location if the dialog shows a filename and destination before you finish. Do not assume that an Outlook download uses Apple Mail’s Downloads folder setting; Mail’s preference applies to the Mail app.
If the folder is missing or the file is hard to find
If the save dialog opens somewhere unexpected, navigate to the destination from the dialog rather than saving and moving the attachment later. Check the sidebar locations and expand folders as needed. If you created the folder moments ago, confirm that you created it in the location you intended; similarly named folders can exist in different places, such as Documents and iCloud Drive.
If you saved but cannot see the file, reopen the email and use its attachment save control again, then check the selected destination. Search Finder for the attachment’s filename if you know it, and consider whether the save created a renamed copy because a file with the same name was already there. Avoid replacing an existing file unless you mean to; where the dialog offers a choice, inspect the filename and destination before confirming.
Some email is handled in a web browser rather than in Apple Mail or Outlook. In that case, use the message’s download control and follow the browser’s own save behavior; the Mail setting described above does not control browser downloads. Interface labels and available options depend on the app and version, so use the controls actually shown in your email client.
Keep the email and the file easy to resume
For the one task of collecting a file from email, the useful sequence is: prepare the Finder folder, save the attachment directly into it, then confirm the file is there. This leaves the email available in its mailbox while the downloaded copy is stored in the folder you chose. If you use Wallo to organize open Mac windows and to-dos by goal, you can keep the mail message and destination Finder window associated with the same task; the attachment itself is still saved through the email app’s documented controls.
