If you changed a document and need an earlier draft, first check whether the Mac app that opens it offers version history. Open the document and choose File > Revert To > Browse All Versions. Review the timeline, then either restore the earlier version or, to keep the current document too, hold Option and choose Restore a Copy. This workflow is available in many Mac apps, but not every app or file has earlier versions. View and restore past versions of documents on Mac — Apple

Before you restore: check the app and the document

Version History is accessed from the app that has the document open. Apple says many apps automatically save document versions as you work; the system can also save a version when a document is opened, saved, duplicated, locked, renamed, or reverted. In the general macOS guide, Apple says versions are saved hourly, or more often during periods of frequent changes. These are general behaviors, not a promise that every app stores every edit or that a specific moment will be available. View and restore past versions of documents on Mac — Apple

Find the file in Finder and open it in the app you used to edit it. If the document is already open, bring that document window forward. Look in the menu bar at the top of the screen for File > Revert To. If Browse All Versions appears, you can use the steps below. If the menu item is missing, the app may not support this macOS version-history workflow for that document; consult the app’s own help or check for a separate history feature. The absence of this command does not mean macOS can reconstruct unsaved edits.

Browse versions and choose the safest recovery

With the target document open, choose File > Revert To > Browse All Versions. The view shows the current document and earlier versions. Click the marks along the timeline, or use the arrows beside the version previews, to move through the available history. Inspect the contents before acting: choose a version from before the unwanted change, and check that it contains the material you need. In Apple’s guide for Pages, previous versions appear as document previews; the general Mac guide also describes timeline browsing. Once you have found the right point, choose the option that matches your goal:

  • Replace the current document with the selected version: Click Restore. In Pages, Apple says the restored version replaces the current one. The macOS guide also offers Done to leave the document as it is without restoring the selection. Restore an earlier document version in Pages on Mac — Apple

  • Keep both the present file and an earlier draft: Hold Option while clicking Restore a Copy. Apple documents this copy action in the macOS guide and Pages guide. The copy opens as a new document in Pages, where it can be edited and saved with another name. • Recover only a passage or object in Pages: Open the earlier version, select the text or objects you need, and choose Edit > Copy. Return to the current document, paste the selection, then click Done. This is useful when most of the current draft is correct and only a section needs recovery. Apple documents this copy-and-paste method specifically for Pages. Restore an earlier document version in Pages on Mac — Apple

Before choosing Restore, pause if you need the latest edits for reference. Creating a copy, when offered, preserves a separate earlier draft; restoring replaces the current version in Pages, and the general Mac guide describes restore as returning the document to the selected version. If you cannot create a copy in the app, use File > Save As or File > Duplicate if those commands are available before restoring. Apple documents Save As for documents in compatible Mac apps, but availability and exact behavior depend on the app. Create and work with documents on Mac — Apple

Use Last Saved or Last Opened for a quick rollback

For a recent change, the File > Revert To menu may list Last Opened, Last Saved, or Previous Save. These choices skip timeline browsing, so confirm the label before selecting one. Apple notes that options can vary. Its Pages guide explains that returning to Last Opened removes changes made since the document was opened, while Last Saved removes changes since the last save. Treat these as replacement actions, not previews, and make a separate copy first if you need to retain the current edits. If Browse All Versions is missing or the right date is unavailable

First confirm you opened the actual file in the app that edited it. Version history is app- and document-dependent; a file opened in a different app, or one that the app does not manage as a versioned document, may not show the command. For an app-specific history, follow that app’s documentation rather than assuming macOS has a universal restore command.

If the document was backed up with Time Machine, try that route for a file-level recovery. Open a Finder window at the folder where the document belongs, open Time Machine, and browse the available backups with the timeline or arrows. Select the file and click Restore; Apple says restored items return to their original location. With many apps, Apple also documents browsing Time Machine versions through File > Revert To > Browse All Versions. This route depends on having a relevant backup. If you do not have a usable app version or Time Machine backup, check whether the document lives in a service or app with its own version history, and consult that provider’s instructions. Do not expect macOS Version History to restore a file that was never versioned or backed up. For collaborative documents, version access can also be limited: Apple says Pages collaborators with editing permission can restore only versions created after sharing began, and view-only collaborators cannot access earlier versions. A quick recovery sequence

  1. Open the document in the app used to edit it, then choose File > Revert To > Browse All Versions if available.

  2. Browse the timeline and inspect versions around the time before the unwanted change.

  3. Choose Restore a Copy with Option held if you want a separate earlier draft; choose Restore only when you intend to replace the current document.

  4. If the feature is unavailable or lacks the needed version, look for a Time Machine backup or the app or service’s own history.

Version History is most useful when the app has retained a version from the point you need. The safe decision is straightforward: preview first, preserve the current draft when uncertain, and use Time Machine or the service’s own history when the app’s timeline does not contain the file or date.
