If Safari bookmarks stop syncing on your Mac, first protect any bookmarks that still exist, then check iCloud settings and restore an archived version only if bookmarks were deleted or replaced. This Mac-focused guide helps you tell a sync delay from missing data and choose a recovery path without overwriting the copy you need.

First, protect the bookmarks you can still see

Open Safari on your Mac and check Bookmarks and bookmark folders. If another Apple device still has the missing items, avoid deleting or reorganizing bookmarks on it while troubleshooting; changes can sync across devices. For a safeguard, export the current Mac bookmarks in Safari using File > Export > Bookmarks and save the HTML file somewhere you can find later. Apple documents this export option for Mac. The export captures the bookmarks currently available in Safari; it does not repair iCloud or guarantee that the HTML file contains missing bookmarks. If no device has a usable copy, skip ahead to iCloud recovery before making further changes.

Check whether this is a sync problem

Apple recommends checking the iCloud System Status page for a known Bookmarks & Tabs issue and confirming the internet connection. Also confirm that each device is signed in to the same Apple Account and has Safari enabled in iCloud. Apple’s Safari sync troubleshooting steps

On macOS 15 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings, click your name, choose iCloud, then click See All beside “Saved to iCloud” and check Safari. On macOS 13.3–14, find Safari under iCloud’s apps list using Show All or Show More Apps. Apple’s current setup guide gives these version-specific paths. Set up iCloud for Safari on Mac

If Safari is already on, Apple’s troubleshooting sequence is to turn it off, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on. Check that the Mac’s date and time are correct, restart Safari, then restart the Mac if needed. Check the other devices too: a different Apple Account or Safari disabled on one device can make its iCloud bookmarks unavailable there. If you use an older macOS version, menu labels and settings locations may differ.

Recover a deleted or replaced bookmark set

Use iCloud’s restore tool when bookmarks are missing because they were deleted or replaced, rather than to diagnose a temporary sync delay. On a Mac, open a browser and go to icloud.com/recovery, then sign in to your Apple Account and select Restore Bookmarks. Choose a version by deletion date, name, or folder and select Restore. Apple says the current bookmark version is archived first, so it can be restored later if you change your mind. Restore Safari bookmarks on iCloud.com

Wait until iCloud finishes restoring before editing bookmarks: Apple says changes made during the restore aren’t saved. Restored bookmarks appear on devices where Safari is enabled in iCloud. Apple’s troubleshooting page describes recovery for bookmarks deleted within the last 30 days; if the recovery page shows “No Bookmarks,” Apple says Safari may not have been enabled in iCloud on your devices. If the bookmarks are only on another browser or in an export

If you have an exported HTML file or bookmarks in another browser, Safari on Mac can import them. Use File > Import Browsing Data from File or Folder to select a file, or choose File > Import From Browser for a supported installed browser. Imported bookmarks are added after existing Safari bookmarks, according to Apple’s guide. Import bookmarks into Safari on Mac

Keep the export until you’ve confirmed that the recovered bookmarks appear in Safari and on any other devices you care about. Importing a copy can restore access to URLs, but it does not itself resume iCloud syncing; return to the account and Safari settings checks above if devices remain out of sync.

Know the limits of recovery

iCloud recovery can restore versions archived by Apple; it is not a way to retrieve any bookmark that was never synced or archived. Older devices also have a documented limit: since December 18, 2024, Macs running macOS Sierra 10.12.5 or earlier can no longer sync bookmarks with iCloud or recover them at iCloud.com. Apple says updating to macOS Sierra 10.12.6 or later is required for that older system generation. Apple’s legacy bookmark requirements

Once the right bookmarks are back, keep the exported HTML copy as a separate fallback and confirm Safari is enabled under the same Apple Account on your devices. If Apple’s checks and restore options don’t show the missing set, the available official tools may not contain another recoverable version.
