What Happens When You Close, Ungroup, or Delete a Tab Group?

Chrome’s group commands affect tabs and saved group identity differently. Read the result before using them on a project set, especially when Chrome sync is enabled.

Close group preserves the saved group

For a saved tab group, Close group removes its tabs from the current tab strip without deleting the group. Google states that the closed group remains available from the bookmarks bar or the Chrome menu under Tab groups and can be reopened. This is the right choice when the set is inactive but should remain intact.

Ungroup keeps the tabs open

Ungroup leaves the individual tabs open on the current device but removes their group. Google warns that the group itself is also deleted on other devices using the same Google Account. Use it when the pages still belong in the current window but no longer need a shared container.

Delete removes the group

Delete group removes the tab group on the current device and other devices using the same Google Account. Do not treat it as a harmless way to hide the group. If you might need the URLs, verify they are bookmarked elsewhere or close the group instead.

Chrome changes group behavior over time, so rely on the current menu and official help rather than older tutorials. Use a disposable test group to confirm sync behavior. Wallo cannot restore a Chrome group after Chrome removes it.
