Stage Manager and Spaces both reduce visible clutter, but they organize different scopes. Stage Manager rotates active app sets within a focused desktop view. Spaces divide windows across separate desktops and full-screen areas.
Choose Stage Manager for short focus sets
Stage Manager is useful when you want the current app or small app group centered and recently used sets available at the side. You can group apps, rearrange their windows, and switch among sets without designing a permanent desktop map.
Choose it when the working set changes often and immediate focus matters more than stable left-to-right location.
Choose Spaces for broad contexts
Spaces work well when you want distinct desktops for work, personal use, a presentation, or a large project. You can switch by gesture, keyboard, or Mission Control and assign an app to a desktop when app-level placement is appropriate.
Choose Spaces when the boundary should remain visible across many switches or when full-screen windows are central to the workflow.

Stage Manager itself depends on “Displays have separate Spaces” being enabled, but that technical relationship does not mean you must actively maintain many desktop Spaces. Start with one primary visual model. Add project groups only when app sets or desktops still fail to identify which outcome a window serves.
