To save one page from a multipage PDF as its own PDF on a Mac, open the document in Preview, show the page thumbnails, and drag the thumbnail for the page you want to the desktop or a Finder folder. Preview creates a new PDF from the dragged page; the original document remains available as a separate file. This method uses Preview’s documented page extraction workflow, so you do not need to rebuild the PDF or convert the page into an image. Add, delete, or move PDF pages in Preview on Mac

Extract one page by dragging its thumbnail

  1. Open the multipage PDF in Preview. In Finder, double-click the PDF, or Control-click it and choose Open With > Preview. Apple documents both methods for opening a PDF in Preview. Get started with Preview on Mac

  2. Choose View > Thumbnails if the page sidebar is not visible. Preview’s thumbnail sidebar displays the PDF’s pages, and clicking a thumbnail navigates to that page. View PDFs and images in Preview on Mac

  3. Locate the page you want. Use the thumbnails to identify it, then drag that page’s thumbnail out of the sidebar and drop it on the desktop or into an open Finder folder. Apple documents that dragging thumbnails from a PDF sidebar to the desktop creates a new PDF. Add, delete, or move PDF pages in Preview on Mac

  4. Find the new PDF where you dropped it. Give it a clear filename in Finder if needed, and open it to confirm it contains the intended page. The result is a separate one-page PDF; the source remains its own document. The verification step is a practical check to catch a neighboring page selected by mistake, especially when thumbnails are small.

Make page selection easier

If the sidebar is hidden, use View > Thumbnails. If the page previews are hard to distinguish, widen the sidebar by dragging its divider. Apple also documents View > Contact Sheet as another way to display page thumbnails. For a long PDF, click a thumbnail to move to that page and inspect the full-size page in the main window before dragging. View PDFs and images in Preview on Mac

A PDF’s printed page label may not match the thumbnail’s position in the file. When in doubt, check the page content itself—such as a heading or figure—rather than relying only on a printed number. This is a selection precaution, not a special Preview feature.

Extract several separate pages

To make one PDF containing several selected pages, select the desired thumbnails together before dragging them out. Apple’s Preview guide documents Command-click to select thumbnails that are not next to one another when moving pages between PDFs. Applying that documented selection behavior to dragging pages out creates a multiple-page extraction; inspect the resulting PDF to confirm the selected pages and their order. If you want each selected page as a separate PDF, drag and drop each thumbnail separately. A group selection produces a document with the selected pages together, rather than a set of individually named files. Preview’s documented approach is a manual page operation; it does not describe a command that automatically exports every selected page as its own file.

Keep the original PDF intact

Dragging a thumbnail to the desktop or a Finder folder creates a new PDF. Do not confuse this with deleting a thumbnail or editing the source: Apple lists deleting pages as a separate action—select the page in the sidebar and press Delete or choose Edit > Delete. If instead you edit the source document—for example, by deleting all pages except one—take care before saving. Apple notes that Preview changes are saved automatically when combining PDFs, and recommends File > Duplicate when you need to preserve originals in that workflow. That warning is specific to combining; it illustrates why creating a new PDF through the thumbnail drag is a clearer route when your goal is an extracted copy. Combine PDFs in Preview on Mac

If dragging the thumbnail does not work

Make sure you are dragging the small page preview in the sidebar, not text or content from the large page view. If the sidebar is absent, choose View > Thumbnails. Try dropping the thumbnail on an open Finder folder if the desktop is obscured by the Preview window.

The documented extraction action is dragging a thumbnail to the desktop. Apple’s guide does not document a dedicated File > Export Selected Page as PDF command, so do not rely on that menu path. File > Export is documented for exporting a PDF or image to a different file type; Apple separately describes exporting a PDF page as an image. That image workflow is useful when you need PNG or another image format, but it is not the same as preserving the page as a PDF. Choose the right result

Use thumbnail drag-and-drop when you need a standalone PDF page and want to keep the original file. Drag one thumbnail for one page; select multiple thumbnails first when you want a combined extract. Use File > Export only when you intend to change the file format, such as exporting a page as an image. Preview documents these controls, but the exact appearance of menus can vary by macOS version.

When the extracted PDF is saved, the workflow is complete. If you are juggling the PDF alongside other open Mac windows and to-dos, Wallo can organize existing windows and tasks by goal with keyboard focusing; it is not needed for extracting the page.
