If you have selected files in Finder and want a folder named for their date, first identify which date you mean, then create and name the folder in the same location. Finder can sort or group items by date, and it can create a folder from a selection, but its documented “New Folder with Selection” command does not automatically name that folder from file dates. You’ll need to enter the date yourself.

1. Choose the date you want to use

Finder exposes several date-related views, and they answer different questions. “Date Created” refers to when an item was created; “Date Modified” helps identify when it was last changed. Finder also offers “Date Added” and “Date Last Opened.” Choose the one that matches the goal: for example, use Date Created for a batch captured or created on a day, or Date Modified for files revised on a day. Apple documents date sorting and grouping in Finder’s view controls. Sort and arrange items in the Finder on Mac

If the selected files span several dates, decide whether the folder should represent one date, a date range, or simply the date of one representative file. Finder’s grouping can reveal date categories, but it does not determine which date should label a mixed selection for you.

2. Find the files by date in Finder

Open the folder containing the files and switch to List view if you want to inspect dates alongside filenames. Use View > Show View Options and choose an available sort order such as Date Modified, or click the relevant column heading if it is shown. You can also use Finder’s Group control and choose an option such as Date Created. The exact controls available depend on the selected view and the dates Finder offers there. Use the resulting order or groups to select only the files you intend to place together. Check the visible dates before proceeding; sorting changes the display order, it does not select every file with a matching date automatically.

3. Create and name the destination folder

With the intended files selected, Control-click one of them and choose New Folder with Selection. Type a clear name based on the date you decided to use, such as 2026-10-15, then press Return. Finder creates a folder containing the selected items. Apple documents this command for selections in a Finder window or on the desktop. Organize files in folders on Mac

A year-month-day name keeps dates in chronological order when folders are sorted by name. If your selection includes files from more than one day, a range such as 2026-10-12 to 2026-10-15 may describe its contents more accurately than a single date. Those are naming suggestions, not automatic Finder formats.

4. Understand what happens to the selected files

Creating a folder with a selection groups the selected items inside the new folder; it is a file organization action, not just a saved view. Before confirming, make sure the selection is complete and that the location is appropriate. If you want to preserve the files where they are, Apple documents holding Option while dragging selected items to a folder to create copies. Organize files in folders on Mac

If Finder’s New Folder command is dimmed, Apple says you cannot create a folder in that current location. Choose a location where you can create folders, then repeat the process. Organize files in folders on Mac

Can the folder name come from the selected files automatically?

Finder’s documented workflow lets you sort or group by dates and create a folder from selected items, but it does not describe an option that reads those files’ dates and inserts one into the new folder’s name. The practical built-in method is to inspect the dates, create the folder, and type the name yourself.

Apple’s Shortcuts app supports custom workflows assembled from actions, but its general Mac guide does not establish a ready-made action sequence that takes a Finder selection, derives a shared date, and names a destination folder accordingly. Avoid assuming such a shortcut exists without confirming the actions available on your Mac and how they handle mixed dates. Create a custom shortcut on Mac

For a small batch or a one-time cleanup, Finder’s manual selection and naming steps are direct. For repeated date-based filing, first define the rule for mixed dates—such as creation date, modification date, or a date range—before looking for an automation that explicitly supports that rule.
